We all want our cars to pass an MOT with minimal issues, but sometimes that’s not the case. However, it seems there are a few interesting trends when it comes to MOTs and which vehicles are most and least likely to pass.

The Daily Mail shared research by a group of academics, who studied test data from 121 million vehicles between 2005 and 2013. They discovered that your motor is more likely to fail its MOT if it’s tested on a Monday than on a Friday or Saturday, for instance.

Another of their findings is that white cars are the most likely colour vehicle to fail an MOT. At the other end of the scale, silver vehicles are most likely to pass the annual road safety test.

Economics professors Oleksander Talavera and Shaun Hargreaves Heap explained that one of the reasons why silver cars are more likely to pass an MOT is because the colour has become associated with reliability.

Their paper states that grey or silver in cars is “associated with balance, high quality and reliability and this would be consistent with our evidence that such cars are more likely to receive the benefit of the doubt in tests”.

Mercedes-Benz was found to be the brand with the best pass rate, with just 15 per cent of these vehicles failing their MOT. By contrast, Renault has the worst record, with an average MOT failure rate of 45 per cent.

It’s not unheard of for MOT centres to refuse tests on vehicles that are unhygienic or in a poor condition. It’s worth spending time thoroughly cleaning your vehicle and caring for it with professional car cleaning products.

Which? recently revealed that lighting and signalling issues were the biggest cause of MOT failures in 2017/18, followed by suspension, brakes and tyres.

If your car fails its MOT, as a last option you may need to look into getting a scrap car valuation at your local scrap yard so that you can dispose of it responsibly.
