Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, an omnivore or a hardened carnivore, if you haven’t tried grilling fruit on the barbecue before, then you really are missing out. It might not seem like something that would work but believe us, it really, really does!

We’re all very familiar with BBQ staples, of course, everything from kebabs, burgers and sausages to halloumi cheese… but if you’re keen to make your al fresco dining experience a bit healthier and a little more well rounded, fruit is the way to go!

When you grill fruit, the sugars caramelise so you’ve got to be a bit patient – but the wait will certainly be worth it. Don’t put your fruit on at the same time as the meat and other main dishes, but wait until they’re done or you’ll find you’ll be eating char.

Give the grill a good coating of oil and then position your fruit over the cooler coals. Close the lid, if you have one, to help the flavours develop. If you’re cooking the likes of watermelon, pineapple and so on, flip them over after a couple of minutes so they cook on both sides and don’t burn.

If you really want to go all out and elevate your grilled fruit, you can marinate them in balsamic vinegar – or even a touch of bourbon. Just keep the kids well away!

So what fruit works well on the BBQ? Experiment away, but some of the best are watermelon, peaches, nectarines, bananas, pears and mango. Delicious!
