Many people’s travel plans have had to be put on hold this year due to coronavirus, but this means intrepid travellers have more time to plan their next adventure.
Indeed, if we all have to remain at home this year, the travel industry could explode in 2021, with everyone desperate to head abroad and feed our holiday cravings.
Tim Williamson, director of marketing and content at Responsible Travel, told the Evening Standard: “Travel will bounce back next year.”
As well as more Brits expected to book foreign trips in 2021, the travel expert anticipates we will adopt a different approach to exploring the world, focusing on learning about different cultures, immersing ourselves in local communities and respecting the environment more.
“This may result in us wanting to travel to places for a little bit longer, rush around less and try to get under the skin of a place,” said Mr Williamson.
In an effort to avoid crowded places, there could be an increase in people travelling to more far-flung, lesser-known destinations where there are likely to be fewer tourists.
Chief executive officer of Small Luxury Hotels of the World Jean-Francois Ferret said people might travel less frequently but “explore the world with intention, experience its intensity and protect its integrity”.
There will also be a rise in travellers focusing on environmentally friendly travel, with Booking.com’s Sustainable Travel Report for 2020 revealing sustainable choices is important to 82 per cent of holidaymakers, and more than half will make more conscious decisions when travel restrictions are lifted.
